Get started
Set up Blurt
Requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or newer.
The download is always the latest version, and Blurt keeps itself up to date automatically after that.
Requires Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
No .NET install needed, the app is self-contained, and Blurt keeps itself up to date automatically after that.
Works wherever Chrome runs: Windows, Mac, and Chromebooks.
Installs from the Chrome Web Store and updates itself automatically.
On macOS
- 1
Open the downloaded file
When the download finishes, click Blurt.dmg in your browser's downloads, or open your Downloads folder and double-click it. A small installer window opens showing the Blurt icon and an Applications folder.
- 2
Drag Blurt into Applications
In that window, drag the Blurt icon onto the Applications folder and let go. That's the whole install. You can close the window and delete Blurt.dmg afterwards.
- 3
Open Blurt
Open Finder ▸ Applications (or Launchpad) and double-click Blurt. Look at the top-right corner of your screen: a mic icon appears in the menu bar. There's no dock icon and no big window, and that's normal. Blurt lives in the menu bar.
- 4
Let Blurt walk you through the rest
The first time it opens, Blurt guides you through a quick email sign-in and each permission it needs (Microphone, Speech Recognition, Accessibility, Input Monitoring). Every one has a Grant button that opens the exact settings screen, so you just flip the switch for Blurt.
- 5
Start talking
Click into any text box, hold your trigger key (Fn by default), say what you want, and release. Your words land right where your cursor is.
Skipped the guided setup?
You can grant the two by-hand permissions anytime: System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Accessibility → switch on Blurt, then the same under Input Monitoring. Afterwards click "Re-check permissions" in Blurt's menu bar menu (or quit and reopen Blurt).
Fn key tip
Set System Settings ▸ Keyboard ▸ "Press 🌐 key to" → Do Nothing, so macOS doesn't fire its own Dictation under Blurt. (Or pick a different trigger key in Preferences ▸ Activation.)
Using it
- Hold your trigger key (Fn on Mac) = push-to-talk (inserts on release).
- Double-tap your trigger key = hands-free toggle (tap-tap to start, tap-tap to stop).
- Single tap = ignored, so no accidental triggers.
Staying up to date
Blurt checks for updates once a day and lets you know when a new version is ready. One click installs it: on Mac from the menu bar icon ▸ "Check for Updates…", on Windows from the tray icon ▸ "Check for Updates".
On Windows
- 1
If your browser warns about the download
Your browser may say Blurt-win-Setup.exe "isn't commonly downloaded" and offer to delete it. Keep it: in Edge, hover the download, click the "…" menu, choose "Keep", then "Show more" and "Keep anyway". In Chrome, click the download, then "Keep". This is the standard notice every new app gets until enough people have downloaded it; it fades on its own.
- 2
Run the installer
Open Blurt-win-Setup.exe from your Downloads folder to start the install.
- 3
If Windows SmartScreen appears
If you see "Windows protected your PC", click "More info", then "Run anyway". Blurt is code-signed by sdereks, llc. SmartScreen can still be cautious with newly published apps until enough people have installed them; this notice fades as downloads accumulate.
- 4
Blurt installs and starts
Blurt installs and starts automatically. Look for the Blurt icon in the system tray (bottom-right, near the clock).
- 5
Finish onboarding
The first-run onboarding grants microphone access and sets your push-to-talk key.
Using it
- Hold your trigger key (Fn on Mac) = push-to-talk (inserts on release).
- Double-tap your trigger key = hands-free toggle (tap-tap to start, tap-tap to stop).
- Single tap = ignored, so no accidental triggers.

In Chrome (browser extension)
Blurt for Chrome puts dictation in the browser itself: Gmail, Google Classroom, Canvas, web chat, any text box on any site.
